Copper stops at a 100 metre channel. A 400,000 square foot building served from one closet at the front cannot work. We locate additional IDFs so no run exceeds 90 metres, and tie them together with fiber backbone rather than stretching copper past its limit.

Pathway that survives the environment

Dust, vibration and forklift traffic rule out casual J-hook runs in a lot of these buildings. Cable tray and conduit fixed to structure, routed clear of dock levellers and racking, and kept out of the way of anything on wheels.

Electrical noise from plant equipment

Conveyors, compressors, VFDs and welding all interfere with copper. Where separation from power is not achievable we use shielded cable and bond it properly. An unbonded shield is worse than no shield, so this is not a corner to cut.

Cold storage and food handling areas

In a typical Bolton distribution building the answer is a combination. Fiber from the main telecom room out to two or three IDFs spread across the floor plate, then Cat6A from each IDF to the access points, cameras and equipment in its zone. Anything trying to serve a building that size from a single closet on copper alone is going to have problems.

One thing to check on any quote. A cabling channel performs to its weakest component, so Cat6A cable terminated into Cat6 jacks gives you a Cat6 channel. If a quote names a cable grade but not matching jacks, panels and patch cords, it is not that grade of install.

Can you work around our shipping and picking schedule?

Yes, and in a working distribution building it is the only way. We plan lift work zone by zone, stay clear of active aisles and dock doors, and shift to nights or weekends where the floor cannot be interrupted at all. After hours changes the rate and we put that in the quote rather than raising it later.

Our scan guns keep dropping signal in the aisles. Can you fix that?

Usually. It is normally one of three things. Access points placed against an empty floor plan before racking went in, not enough of them for the aisle depth, or the cabling to them limiting the uplink speed. We run a site survey with the racking in place, then tell you whether the fix is repositioning, adding access points, or recabling the ones you have. Sometimes it is just two extra APs.

Do you handle cabling in coolers and freezer rooms?

Yes. Bolton has a lot of food distribution and we do this regularly. It needs cable rated for the temperature range, enclosures rated for the environment, and penetrations through insulated panel sealed properly rather than foamed over. It is slower work than a dry warehouse and we price it that way rather than discovering it on site.

What is the difference between Cat6 and Cat6A for a warehouse?

Distance and power. Both carry 10 Gigabit, but Cat6 only does it over roughly 37 to 55 metres depending on how tightly bundled it is, while Cat6A holds 10 Gigabit over the full 100 metres. Cat6A also handles high wattage PoE better, which matters for cameras with heaters and for current access points. In a large building where runs are long anyway, Cat6A is usually the right call.

Do we need fiber, or will copper do the whole building?

In a building of any size you need both. Copper stops at 100 metres, so on a long floor plate you place several telecom closets and link them with fiber, then run copper out from each closet to the devices in its zone. Copper carries Power over Ethernet, which fiber cannot, so cameras, access points and door hardware stay on copper.

Do you certify the cabling and give us test results?

Yes. Every drop is certified with a Fluke tester to the relevant TIA limits, and you receive a report per run plus an as-built record and a patch panel port map. A continuity check with a cheap wire map tester is not certification, it does not prove the run will carry the speed you paid for, and it does not qualify for a manufacturer warranty.

Can you take over cabling another contractor started?

Regularly. We test what is there, tell you which drops pass and which do not, and give you a repair scope instead of a blanket recommendation to replace everything. You get the test data either way and you decide what to do with it.

Are you licensed and insured for industrial sites?

Yes. We carry liability insurance and WSIB coverage and can send certificates to your health and safety contact before we arrive. Our crews are trained for lift work and follow site specific orientation where a building requires it, which most Bolton distribution operators do.
